TALK: 5 Portrait Photographers Have a Go Yourself
by Lawrence Homewood
The idea behind this presentation is to inspire club photography and show how styles can be so different. We look at the work of David Bailey, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Terry Richardson and Steve McCurrey. We critique 3 images hoping if possible to get audience participation or feedback. Finally I conclude this presentation with working examples taken in the Studio and on location.

TALK: Lockdown Projects
by Alexis Maryon
TALK: Lockdown Projects
by Alexis Maryon
‘Revealed’, ‘Managed Retreat’ and ‘A Grimoire’ are all projects I undertook during ‘the COVID times’.
Revealed is an examination of the make up of plants and leaves, their form and architectural beauty shot in my studio with Northern light it is also a tribute to the late great Karl Blossfeldt. Managed Retreat is a journey from East to West Sussex featuring the coastlines at low tide, those threatened with climate change, those adapted for medium term survival and those already let go. A Grimoire is a spell book handed down from mother to daughter. The project documents the rituals and celebrations of the Pagan Year. I am also undertaking a project tentatively entitled ‘Lewes Behind the Scenes’ depicting the more unseen life of Lewes which is proving difficult and satisfying in equal measures. This project is very much unfinished but I’ll be showing some of my favourites so far. I will also feature recent portraits from various record company and magazine shoots. |

Carol Jacobi has been exhibiting and writing about photography for 10 years as part of her work as a Curator of British Art at Tate Britain. The talk draws on her experience to explore entanglements between photography and the other arts, from the experimental beginnings of the medium through and beyond its flowering as an independent art form. Pre-Raphaelite, impressionist and modern works are discussed alongside the photographers which they inspired and which inspired them. They include Victorians such as Roger Fenton, and Julia Margaret Cameron, moderns such as Bill Brandt and contemporary photographers Hugh Locke and Sunil Gupta.

TALK: 'CONVERSATIONS' RAMBLINGS OF A SO-CALLED STREET PHOTOGRAPHER - David Cantor
Much of my photography, predominantly street portraiture, takes place in and around the historic Spitalfields area of London’s East End. The often random approach to my work has resulted in some award-winning images.
This is not a how-to presentation about photographing strangers, more about the stories behind the images and sometimes life-enhancing encounters. That said, I am more than happy to share my approach to street portraiture and answer any questions. I also share my belief that there is much to be gained by developing a deep knowledge of the geography, history and people of a chosen location.
There are three handouts for distribution after the presentation, they are:
1. 'Approaching Strangers' - Some recommendations for initial research, inspiration and hints to engage with strangers.
2. 'Fleeting Intimacies' - A guide to the 'connecting with strangers' universe.
3. 'Further Research' - Recommendations to discover photographers that you may not know.
