We all know people in camera clubs that have all the latest camera equipment, but they never seem able to ‘consistently’ take winning images. Yet other people in the club seem to regularly produce images that score highly. Why is this?
There are numerous reasons, and in this talk I try to explain some them and how you can avoid the pitfalls so many photographers fall into.
I show some of my best images, across a range of subjects and I explain how and where I have taken them. As in a lot of my talks, I also show the `original raw file` and then ‘finished image’ and explain how an image can be improved significantly with careful processing.

I would describe myself as a "Non Professional" photographer, that is to say I do not earn a living from taking photographs. That does not mean I cannot take a quality photograph!
The benefit for me is that I have complete photographic license, every photograph I take is of my own choosing for my own reasons and on any subject that takes my fancy. I am very fortunate nobody else calls the shots apart from myself.

TALK: Living and Working as a Professional Photographer in Namibia – Thinking Photography

Scott moved from the UK at the very start of the digital photography revolution. Finding himself as one of only three professional photographers in Namibia he was in high demand for a wide range of assignments. Embracing and teaching the new technology, in what was often an alien and frequently harsh environment, was a steep learning curve. Many of his courses were filling up three times over as Namibians were hungry to learn . The pressure was on. In the first half he explores the changes to photography, dispelling some of the myths that continue to shackle photographers.
He then examines some of his more demanding assignments, demonstrating how he approaches any photographic situation, ordinary or extreme, and how he sets the camera accordingly – he doesn’t give settings, situations and other photographers’ gear is always different - instead he explains the thinking behind the shot.
In the second half he journeys right across Africa, following the diamonds along the Orange River and then north, into the old diamond mining areas, way out into our Forbidden Zone.
Scott still recognises the truths that have been with us since the early days of film, yet casts off restrictions, pushing the camera to its limits, to walk away with THE shot. The talk, as usual is packed with tips and stories from Namibia, his home, and, arguably, the most photogenic country on the planet.
