The content of Scott’s presentations is as diverse as the Namibian people, the wildlife and the land itself. He talks lovingly of a land that fast became his home. Camera technique in these very different, sometimes arduous and often extreme conditions is also covered and questions are encouraged throughout. This is an Africa that visitors can only guess at.

TALK: Urban and street monochrome
by Jerry Webb
Jerry Webb is a British photographer and designer.
As a PHOTOGRAPHER he is self-taught and often at odds with conventional perceptions, interpreting what he sees using his own individual methods and distinctive style. His photographs include people, portrait, event, street and project photography and he has been published many times. He has had exhibitions in London and Sussex where he now lives and works. Although he works largely in monochrome Jerry is an accomplished colour photographer and processor. His work is a combination of self-initiated projects and commissioned photographs. |

I am a self-taught Fine Art photographer, with a special fascination for small details, for lost, abandoned, poignant and generally broken objects, and also for darkness contrasting with light, both in a physical and emotional sense.
Many of my illustrative images simply evolve as I am working on them - I start off with a quite straightforward idea of what I want to achieve but am always willing to venture wherever the photograph wants me to go, as I overlay multiple images together or add textures, scanned documents as new layers, and subtle shading. Two photographs may blend together in a way that I could not have previously imagined, and this is one of the things that I find so exciting and all-consuming when I work, to produce a final image that perhaps a little bit different, that invokes emotion in the viewer and makes them question their sense of the world as they know it. |

TALK: Landscape Photography
by Slawek Staszczuk
In my personal work I have but one goal. And that is to find and capture beauty in the world around me. Beauty is often transient and only happens for a few minutes. Or seconds, or a fraction of a second…
So my job is to be on the lookout for those moments. To be ready and to make the best of them. It is obviously a very subjective process. Since beauty is “in the eye of the beholder”. Besides, you could argue that everything on earth has already been seen. And it has probably been photographed as well. But not in every way… That’s where we can make a difference. However small. |

I was fortunate enough to grow up on the west coast of France, in a rural region wedged between the sandy waters of the Gironde estuary and the wild Atlantic Ocean. From an early age, I spent my time immersed in water, from days spent surfing learning the intimate secrets of the ocean’s waves, to time spent discovering the rich flora and fauna of the wetlands where my grandparents tended their oyster pools.
I started to notice that wherever I went, and whatever type of photography I explored, something kept drawing me back to that one element: water. I felt most inspired on days spent on sand dunes and clifftops capturing wave breaks between intense sea sprays, or wading into icy lochs to capture a dusk light setting between storm clouds. It is exhilarating how much a body of water will change a landscape, from year to year or even hour by hour. It thrills me that I can take two completely different shots in almost the same moment; one which captures fine movements as water pushes its way between rock formations, and another where the textures are frozen and the softened light becomes the focus. |
